7 tips for a stronger nursing resume

Lead your summary with your license and specialty

State your credentials immediately: "Registered Nurse (RN) with 5 years of experience in critical care and ICU settings." Hiring managers and applicant tracking systems look for this right away.

List certifications prominently

Add a dedicated Certifications section using the Custom Section feature. Include BLS, ACLS, PALS, or specialty certifications with expiration dates so nothing looks outdated.

Quantify your patient load

Numbers matter: "Managed care for 6–8 patients per 12-hour shift in a 32-bed medical-surgical unit" tells a hiring manager far more than "provided patient care."

Include the unit type and bed count

Always mention the type of unit (ICU, ED, L&D, NICU, med-surg) and the size of the facility or floor. This context helps recruiters match you to the right role quickly.

Tailor your skills for travel nursing or agency work

If you are applying for travel or agency roles, emphasize adaptability, quick onboarding, and experience across multiple facility types. Add "charge nurse" experience if applicable.

Include your state license number and compact status

If you hold a multi-state compact license, note it clearly. Put your license number in your summary or a Licenses section so HR can verify it without emailing you back.

Keep education and clinical hours for new graduates

If you are a new grad, include your clinical rotation hours and specialties. This replaces the work experience section and demonstrates hands-on exposure before your first job.

Common nursing resume keywords
